President Prof. K. Stronks
Professor Karien Stronks has been president of the Health Council since 1 January 2025. Karien graduated in health sciences and political sciences. She has been professor of Public Health at Amsterdam UMC since 2006.
Besides her role as professor, she has held various administrative and management positions. For example, she was head of the Department of Social Medicine at the AMC from 2006 to 2017.
Karien is well acquainted with the work of the Health Council. Since 2006, she was involved in several advisory reports as committee member and chair, and from 2012 to 2019 she was vice chair of the standing committee Public Health. From 2015 to 2019, she was a member of the presidium committee.
The position of president of the Health Council is a part-time position. In addition, Karien Stronks remains at Amsterdam UMC, where she continues scientific research on public health and prevention and on mechanisms underlying differences in health and accessibility and quality of care.
