Population screening act: prostate cancer screening using MRI
To determine in population screening whether follow-up after a positive PSA-test can be performed with equal effect with either Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) or Transrectal Ultrasonography (TRUS), the Erasmus MC in Rotterdam and the UMC St Radboud in Nijmegen have requested a license because of the Population Screening Act. In total, 15,000 men from Rotterdam between 55 and 70 years would be invited to participate. In advance and at random it would be determined if a positive PSA test - with a cut-off value greater than or equal to 2.0 ng/ml – would be followed up by either TRUS or MRI. On December 7th, the Committee on Population Screening recommended the Minister of Health, Welfare and Sport to deny the applicants the requested license.
