Fitness to drive after experiencing psychosis

People who have experienced psychosis can currently be declared fit to drive after a period of 6 months without symptoms. The Health Council advises not to specify the length of this period in the law anymore, but to let a medical specialist determine this period during the treatment process.

The severity and course of a psychosis can strongly differ per patient. This is why the currently required period of 6 months without symptoms is often experienced as unnecessarily limiting. The Minister of Infrastructure and Water Management (IenW) asked the Health Council whether this period can be reviewed. According to the council, a more personalised approach is possible when the medical specialist establishes the required symptom-free period for each patient. The council underlines the importance of validated measuring tools and training of medical specialists in use of the assessment criteria.
