COVID-19 vaccination in 2025
Vaccination against COVID-19 has been carried out annually since 2023. At the request of the Minister of Health, Welfare and Sport, the Health Council of the Netherlands has assessed whether adjustments to the target groups for vaccination are needed for 2025. The council recommends offering, just like in 2024, vaccination this autumn to people over 60, medically high-risk groups, and people aged 50-59 who are offered flu vaccination every year. These groups are still at increased risk of serious illness and mortality due to COVID-19. Vaccination offers effective protection against this.
In 2024, vaccination was offered to all people over 18 who are offered the flu vaccination every year. In the current situation, the risk of serious illness and mortality for people aged 18-49 from the flu group is lower than in previous years, which means that the added value of vaccination is currently too limited.
The council also advises, as in 2024, to offer vaccination to healthcare workers who have direct contact with vulnerable patients, in order to protect these patients.
