Public consultation on background documents Dutch dietary guidelines 2025

The Health Council offers the opportunity to comment on the draft versions of nine background documents to the upcoming advisory report Dutch dietary guidelines 2025. You can respond until 18 May.

The Dutch dietary guidelines 2025 provide recommendations on foods, drinks and dietary patterns. The latest version of these guidelines was published in 2015. Currently, the guidelines are being updated by the permanent committee on Nutrition. The updated guidelines will be published in parts. The publication of the largest advisory report is expected by the end of 2025. In this report, the committee advises on dietary sources of protein, such as meat, fish, nuts and legumes.

Based on the most recent scientific insights, the committee evaluates whether the existing guidelines can be maintained or need to be adjusted. In doing so, it looks at health effects and additionally takes into account the environmental impact of foods. During the advisory process, the committee consults experts and stakeholders from various disciplines. The current public consultation specifically focuses on the evaluation of the scientific literature, as described in Chapter 3 (and beyond) of the background documents.

The background documents that have now been made public focus on dietary sources of protein, and cover the evaluation of:

  • chronic disease risk (7 background documents);
  • environmental impact (1 background document);
  • food safety (1 background document) – this will be published on April 29.

Public consultation

The public consultation focuses on two central questions:

  1. Did the committee miss key scientific publications that fit within the methodology of the committee and that may affect the conclusions?
  2. Are there inaccuracies in the presentation of the scientific literature?

Comments will be considered if:

  • they are submitted via the appropriate response form, which can be downloaded from this page;
  • they relate to Chapter 3 (and beyond) of the background documents;
  • they are phrased and substantiated as specifically as possible, following the instructions given on the response form.

Please send the completed response form as an e-mail attachment to: voeding@gr.nl.

Please note that your comments will be published on the Health Council’s website upon publication of the advisory report. This includes:

  • your comments;
  • your title and name;
  • the name of your organisation, if applicable.

The committee will publish an integrated response to all received comments that fall within the scope of this public consultation, so you will not receive an individual response to your comment(s). All comments received and the integrated response of the committee will be published on our website when the final advisory report is published.

Please note: These are public drafts, intended for comment retrieval. Do not copy or quote from this draft background document. The final version of the background document will be published after processing comments from the public consultation.
