Opportunities for improvement of the breast cancer population screening programme
The Dutch breast cancer screening programme leads to a reduction in breast cancer mortality. Modifications to the programme, such as changing start or stop ages, will not lead to better outcomes, given current constraints on capacity. This is the Health Council's conclusion. However, the Council does expect that, within a few years, the programme can be significantly improved by through the use of artificial intelligence (AI), risk stratification and new imaging techniques.
